Sunday, Oct 13, 2024: Lessons Learned and Resource Tent Deep Dive
Lessons Learned from Hurricane Helene in North Carolina:
Power outages and damaged infrastructure.
Communities relying on federal aid and volunteer efforts.
Catastrophic flooding, destroying roads and bridges.
Access is cut off to isolated areas.
Widespread cell phone and internet outages.
Community support - bike repairs, wellness checks, businesses volunteering their spaces
Best Practices for Resource Tent / Manager:
We ran a mini-drill focusing only on the Resource Tent, one of the core stations that will be established during a real emergency.
This involved attendees acting as scribes, resource manager and "attendees" following simulated written scenarios.
Sunday, June 9, 2024: Rumble Ready Drill!
We joined multiple Hubs throughout Seattle as they activated their volunteers, set up the Hub, and simulated helping their neighbors. Our practice scenario was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake along the Seattle Fault Line.
Over 50 people showed up to volunteer or observe our Madison Valley Drill!
We shut down 29th Ave E between East Harrison and East Republican Street and deployed our hub tents and tables on that block
NOTE that the location for this particular drill differed from our usual gathering spot at the MLK Fame Center. This was to encourage greater foot traffic from East Madison Street. ANY ACTUAL DEPLOYMENT WILL OCCUR AT THE MLK FAME CENTER.
Sunday, April 21, 2024: Hub-to-Hub Communication Drill!
This Radio + Runner exercise involved our hub plus other Central East sector hubs Madison Park, Epiphany-Madrona and North Capitol Hill. A small group of people at each hub including GMRS operators and cyclists passed messages between hubs both physically and over the air and recorded the response time to complete them.
Saturday, April 6, 2024: Greeter workshop and 2023/2024 Review!
We reviewed 2023 and talked about what's coming up in 2024.
We discussed hazards and risks specific to Madison Valley and Madrona
We had our first Role Review Workshop focusing on the GREETER role: An essential role ensuring efficient hub operation, involving welcoming visitors, assisting with forms, and directing traffic within the hub. We aim to clarify responsibilities and streamline processes.
Monday, March 18, 2024: ADVANCED Tabletop 301 Drill
Our neighbors at the Madison Park Hub practised Advanced Hub Roles. Madison Valley team members were present, too! Held at the Parkshore Senior Living Community.
Saturday March 9th, 2024: Great Hall at Epiphany Episcopal Church
The new Epiphany/Madrona Hub hosted its first informational meeting. This hub covers the area just to the Southeast of our hub catchment zone, but it is still in its early stages of development. Peter and Frank from our hub stopped by to support Cindi Barker in her presentation to Madrona residents.
Saturday Nov 4, 2023: Scouts Hub Disaster Drill at the MLK Fame Center
From Noon to 2pm, we ran a Disaster Drill for local Scouts! The drill involved setting up and striking tents, understanding Hub Roles, and practicing scenarios they are likely to encounter during a disaster.
Thursday, October 12th, 2023: Tabletop 101 Drill at the MLK Fame Center
From 7pm to 9pm, we practiced (on paper, sitting at tables) setting up and running a Hub. We learned how a Hub provides immediate and essential support to our communities after an emergency (in our area, most likely an earthquake).
Saturday, September 9th, 2023: Grand Opening
From 1:00 to 2:00 pm, we held a Grand Opening for the Madison Valley Hub! Food and beverages were served while neighbors were walked through the various stations as they would be set up during an emergency.
May 21, 2023: Skills Fair at the MLK Fame Center in Madison Valley!
We had a successful afternoon introducing preparedness techniques to our neighbors. Thank you to our volunteers who staffed tables covering:
Water
Hygiene
Communications
Prepared Pets!
Home Safety
Utilities
and more!
